Two buses a day from Andermatt (July–Sept) cross the Furka Pass (2431m) west into Canton Valais, while mainline passenger and car-carrying trains use the year-round Furka-Basis Tunnel beneath the pass. Buses aside, the main draw on the Uri side is a volunteer-run antique mountain steam train, the DFB, which puffs its way from Realp – a hamlet an easy hour-and-three-quarter walk from Andermatt – up to a station near the pass (mid-July to mid-Aug 4 daily; mid-June to mid-July & mid-Aug to Sept Fri–Sun 2–4 daily; www.net4u.ch/dfbfurka). In 1999, test trains successfully continued on into the old Muttbach tunnel beneath the pass, a short ride ending up in Gletsch; old-time passenger services are slated to run between Realp and Gletsch in 2000 or 2001, with a projected run along the length of the line from Realp to Oberwald to follow.

Between Realp and the pass is Hotel Tiefenbach (041/887 13 22, fax 887 00 70), with quality dorms from Fr.30, also open in winter as base camp for some of the best cross-country skiing in the country.
